How to Turn a PDF into a PowerPoint Presentation

Convert PDF pages into slides you can present, annotate and rearrange in PowerPoint, Google Slides or Keynote, and learn how to get the cleanest conversion.

When to convert a PDF to slides

Presentations are often shared as PDFs because they open anywhere. But when you need to present that material yourself, add speaker notes, reorder sections or reuse a few slides in your own deck, you need a PowerPoint file. Converting the PDF gives you one slide per page to work with.

How to convert a PDF to PowerPoint

PDF to PowerPoint converts the document on PDF Utility's server. The file is deleted from the server as soon as the presentation is returned.

  1. Open PDF to PowerPoint and select your PDF. Enter the password if it is protected.
  2. Choose PPTX for current versions of PowerPoint, Google Slides and Keynote, or PPT for PowerPoint 97-2003.
  3. Start the conversion and download the presentation.
  4. Open it and check each slide against the original PDF.

What to expect from the result

Each PDF page becomes one slide. Page content is imported as individual objects where possible, but a PDF does not record how the original slides were built, so text may arrive as separate text boxes rather than a single editable placeholder, and some graphics may be grouped or imported as images.

The result is best for presenting, annotating and rearranging existing material. If you need to substantially rewrite slides, it is often quicker to rebuild them using the converted slides as a reference.

Get a better conversion

  • Remove pages you do not need first with Delete PDF Pages; every page becomes a slide.
  • Reorder pages with Rearrange PDF before converting, so the deck starts in the right order.
  • PDFs with a landscape page size produce slides that fill the screen; portrait pages leave space at the sides.
  • PDFs exported from PowerPoint or Keynote convert more cleanly than scans, which contain only page images.

Opening the file in other apps

PPTX opens in Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides (upload it to Google Drive, then open it with Slides), Apple Keynote and LibreOffice Impress. If you only need to show the pages as they are, you can also present the PDF directly in full-screen mode in most PDF viewers.
