About this edit pdf tool

Add page numbers to PDF

Number every page of a PDF, or only the pages you choose. Pick the position, the format and the starting number, and preview exactly where the numbers will land before you download.

Choose from simple numbers, Page 1, 1 / N or Page 1 of N, or write your own text. Leave the cover page unnumbered, start counting from any number, and mirror the numbers on facing pages for double-sided printing. Rotated and cropped pages are handled, and everything runs in your browser.

Tips for better results

  • Put numbers at the bottom center for reports and the outer corner for printed, double-sided documents.
  • Skip the first page so the cover stays clean and the next page starts at 1.
  • Use a large margin if the document will be hole-punched or bound.
  • Number after merging and rearranging, so the numbers match the final page order.

Processing happens locally in your browser. Your documents are not uploaded to PDF Utility for this tool, giving you more control over sensitive files.

Frequently asked questions

Add page numbers to PDF FAQ

Quick answers about formats, processing and what to expect from this tool.

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Upload the PDF, choose where the numbers go and which format you want, check the preview and select Add page numbers. Download the new PDF with every page numbered.

Can I leave the cover page without a number?

Yes. Set 'Skip the first pages' to 1 and the cover stays blank. The next page shows the starting number, so page 2 of the file reads 1 when you start at 1.

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Enter any whole number, 0 or higher, as the starting number. It is shown on the first numbered page and the numbers count up from there.

Can I number only some pages?

Yes. Enter a page range such as 2-5, 8, 10- to number only those pages. Pages outside the range are left as they are.

How do I print each page's real number on a range?

Turn on 'Use real page numbers'. Each numbered page then shows its position in the file, so the range 2-3 prints 2 and 3 instead of 1 and 2. The starting number is not used in this mode, and {total} is the number of pages in the document.

Which number formats can I use?

Choose 1, Page 1, 1 / N or Page 1 of N, or write your own text with {n} for the page number and {total} for the last number, for example 'Page {n} of {total}'.

Does it work on rotated or mixed-size pages?

Yes. The numbers are placed on the page as you see it, so they stay upright and in the chosen corner on rotated, cropped and mixed-size pages.

Can I mirror the numbers for double-sided printing?

Yes. Turn on mirroring and the left and right positions swap on even pages, so the numbers sit on the outside edge of both sides of the sheet.

Are my PDF and password uploaded?

No. The numbers are added in your browser, and the selected file and any password are not uploaded to PDF Utility.

Is Add Page Numbers free?

Yes. Add Page Numbers is free to use with no account or sign-up, and PDF Utility does not add its own watermark to your file.
